FEELING DEFLATED BY BAR EXAM RESULTS?

Failing bar exam results do not define you

You poured your heart and soul into studying for the bar exam. You’ve envisioned yourself confidently moving on with life when you get your bar exam results.

But then... bar exam results arrived. And, you failed.

This wasn't the news you were hoping for.

First, my heart goes out to you. I am so sorry that you are going through this. But. I promise that you will make it through this. It is but a moment.

Second, here's the hard truth: failing the bar exam is incredibly common. It wasn’t supposed to happen to you, true. But, it's not a reflection of your intelligence or you potential. It just means you've joined a club of bar exam takers who are fighting incredibly hard to pass the bar exam.

Think of it this way: the bar exam is a highly specific test that requires a unique skillset.

It's not just about memorizing endless rules. It’s about applying your knowledge of the law strategically while under immense pressure. It means — like many law grads you find yourself needing a different approach to bar prep.

20-40% of first time takers get failing bar exam results

Pass rates across the US can vary wildly for first time bar exam takes, often hovering between 60% and 80%. That means, on average, 20-40% of first time bar exam takers walk away needing to regroup. So, feeling defeated? Completely normal. Remember, you're surrounded by a supportive community of fellow bar exam takers who understand this journey.

This is a growth opportunity

Now, let's shift gears. Failing the bar exam doesn't have to be the end of your story. It is a powerful opportunity for growth. Here's how to reframe your experience:

This attempt gave you invaluable insights into your strengths and weaknesses. Analyze your results – what topics need more attention? What tripped you up? Writing? Multiple choice? Contracts? Torts? Use this knowledge to craft a strategic plan for your next attempt.

Reignite Your Why

Remember the fire that drove you to law school? Reconnect with your core purpose. Maybe it's fighting for justice, advocating for the underrepresented, making money, or building a legacy of excellence. Let this WHY re-fuel your determination while you prep to retake the bar exam.

Find Your Tribe

I like circles — not islands. Apply to join The Catalyst Circle. It’s supported bar prep with me — as your bar exam coach — and a core group of bar exam takers who are determined to pass the bar exam this time. We work one-on-one and in a group and meet several times each week for the months leading up to the bar exam.

Why not surround yourself with a support system that truly gets it. You need fellow re-takers who share your experiences, understand the challenges, and can celebrate your victories (big and small!).

Acknowledge that you are sad

So, yes… Have a good cry about your bar exam results. Acknowledge how not getting the bar exam results you wanted makes you feel.

With a renewed sense of purpose, a strategic approach, and a supportive tribe by your side, you can get the bar exam results that you want. The next time you sit, you won't just pass the bar exam, your goal is to crush it.

Then, when you’re ready, pick yourself up and go and show them what you're truly made of!

❤️ Michele
